Your smile can truly be your best attribute. It’s an important part of your look and the feature that many people notice when they meet you for the first time. But, let’s face it, not everyone is born with a Hollywood smile. Many of us have to undergo orthodontic treatment to obtain that perfect smile. In spite of our society’s commitment to aesthetics, sometimes paying a visit to one’s dentist or orthodontistmight not rank high on the list of things people really want to do.

In Troy, however, there’s an orthodontic practice that patients truly enjoy visiting. In fact, most of Dr. Nick S. Palmer’s patients, young and old, can’t wait to book their next appointment with their affable orthodontic specialist. That’s because, unlike other area orthodontic offices, Dr. Palmer’s practice in Troy is as inviting and warm as can be. “We try and make this as comfortable as possiblefor our patients,” says Dr. Palmer. “We know everyone on a first-name basis, and we try to be very personal with our patients.”

Rather than the usual quiet, antiseptic feel that many other dentists’ offices may exude, Dr. Palmer’s staff and office are bursting with personality. “I’d say that our office is definitely more relaxed and casual than others,” says Dr. Palmer. “This tends to really put our younger patients at ease, and their parents observe this, and it helps the parents feel confident in our work, as well.” Though the office ambiance is more relaxed than your average Oakland County office, Dr. Palmer is anything but “relaxed” when it comes to his quest for knowledge. He remains at the forefront of his field and is an internationally recognized doctor of orthodontics. He is a graduate of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where he received his bachelor’s degree in dentistry and his master’s degree in orthodontics. Additionally, he’s an active member of the American Association of Orthodontists and a fellow of the World Federation of Orthodontists.

Another aspect of Dr. Palmer’s work life that keeps him abreast of the latest developments in orthodontics is his commitment to the education of future orthodontists. He has been an instructor at the University of Michigan for 13 years and is currently the director of the university’s Graduate Pediatric Orthodontic Clinic. Teaching at U. of M. not only bolsters his graduate students’ skills; it also helps Dr. Palmer keep a fresh perspective on orthodontics. “The students I work with are exceptional and from all over the world,” says Dr. Palmer. “By critiquing their work, I can’t help but look long and hard at my own work. This has made me a better orthodontist.”Dr. Palmer is such a high-quality orthodontist that, in many cases, he ends up treating entire families. The members of the Vogt family (shown in the accompanying photo) are some of Dr. Palmer’s biggest fans. Their connection with Dr. Palmer began back before the four Vogt children were even a twinkle in their parents’ eyes. “I actually came to Dr. Palmer before I had children, for my problems with T.M.D. [temporomandibular disorder],” says Laura Vogt. “He assisted me with that problem and I was eventually fitted for braces. It worked 100 percent! He did such a wonderful job.” The proof of Dr. Palmer’s success is evident in Mrs. Vogt’s gorgeous smile. Naturally, when the time came for her older children, Megan and Bradley, to undergo orthodontic work, there was no other choice than Dr. Palmer. Laura Vogt’s oldest daughter, Megan, even credits Dr. Palmer for helping her stop a childhood habit. “Dr. Palmer was the only one that could get me to stop sucking my thumb,” says Megan, whose braces are now off, revealing a beautiful smile. “He’s just – the best!” It isn’t unusual for entire families, like the Vogts, to see Dr. Palmer for their orthodontic needs.“Many of my new patients are mothers who watched all of their children gothrough orthodontics and now it’s mom’s turn,” says Dr. Palmer. Because of Dr. Palmer’s 29 years of success in the area, his Troy office has become too small. “We’ve really enjoying working in this community, but we’ve just outgrown this space,” he says. “We’re moving this fall to a brand-new facility right down the road at Dequindre and 17 Mile in Sterling Heights. We’ll only be a mile away, for the convenience of all our patients. We can’t wait to see you there!”
